Inspiration
Popular Icelandic attractions
From geysers and glaciers to remote hot springs and black sand beaches, Iceland is full of landscapes that feel impossible until you see them. Here are a few of the must-see stops for your road trip.
Plan your trip-
01
Svartifoss
Svartifoss is a waterfall surrounded by black basalt hexagonal columns that are like the pipes of a giant organ, hence the name Svartifoss (Blackfalls). This is one the most unique attractions in Iceland which is located near Vatnajokull (Europe's largest glacier). It's a mile hike and on the way you can also see three other waterfalls.
-
02
Seljalandsfoss
Seljalandsfoss is close to the ring road — a perfect stop while driving the South Coast of Iceland. The waterfall has its origins underneath the glacier Eyjafjallajokull, which is a volcano that erupted in 2010. Floodlights illuminate the water at night on both sides.
-
03
Hallgrimskirkja
Hallgrimskirkja is a church located in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. Standing 73 meters tall, it was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson who took inspiration from basalt columns, glaciers and mountains. Take an elevator ride to the top to witness a beautiful view of the capital.
-
04
Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir is Iceland's National Park, protected by law as it was the open air site of Iceland's parliament. It sits on a tectonic plate rift between Europe and America and is part of the Golden Circle — one of the most popular tourist routes in Iceland.
-
05
Whale Watching in Skjálfandi Flói
Whale watching is a popular activity in Iceland. The best-known location is Shaky Bay in Húsavík on the north coast, considered one of the best places in Europe to see whales. You can also see puffins and try kite surfing here.
-
06
Blue Lagoon
One of the wonders of the world and voted one of the most beautiful places to visit, the Blue Lagoon is a breathtaking experience. Located near Keflavík International Airport, it is often the first or last stop for visitors. Book your visit beforehand.
-
07
Golden Circle
The Golden Circle includes Iceland's most iconic attractions — Geysir where Strokkur thrusts water 30 meters into the sky, Gullfoss (the Golden Falls) and Þingvellir National Park, the backdrop for several Game of Thrones episodes.
-
08
Glacier Lagoon
Jökulsárlón is a frostborn wonderland of age-old icebergs drifting across the water. The broken floes are streaked with blue and black — a photographer's paradise. Used as an opening scene in Roger Moore's "A View To Kill" in 1985.
